The 2018 Sony World Photography Awards photos were recently published. The lay-person might think, "Ah, excellence in photography! This is probably what they teach on Photography Degree courses." And on this, the hypothetical lay-person, would be dead-wrong, at least as far as my teaching ethos goes, because for me, the opposite is true: I teach students to laugh at, and deride, this sort of cliche-ridden, tawdry garbage. Or, more accurately, what I do is support students to analytically critique such images, reflecting on their weaknesses and drawing attention to their constant reliance on well-worn, unoriginal--and very dull--tropes.
